What’s the best way to buy HDPE Pipe / Conduit?
This is a question we get asked a lot. There are many different answers, depending on the project you are undertaking. When purchasing HDPE pipe (High-Density Polyethylene) the basics are, what size pipe? What wall thickness? How many feet? We currently manufacture sizes from ½ inch up to 4-inch.
For purposes of this sample, I am going to focus on our three most popular sizes. 1.25-inch, 2-inch, and 4-inch. The standard reel for all three sizes is a 96-inch reel. The 1.25-inch pipe has 8000 total feet. 2 inch has 4000 and 4 inch has 550 feet.
The best way to buy this pipe is in even reels. If the project calls for 12 reels, that would be an even truckload and the most economical way to ship things. Even if it is twelve reels of different pipe you will still recognize savings.
Truckload totals are: 1.25 inch is 96,000 feet. 2 inch would be 48,000 feet. 4-inch is 6600 feet. Again, this would be the most economical way to purchase our HDPE conduit.
We also manufacture UL listed pipe. (Underwriters Laboratories) this pipe is verified to meet or exceed the testing that UL requires. This is most commonly used in electrical work.
Full truckload orders are great, but we also get a lot of orders for smaller quantities as well as smaller or larger reels. Again, ordering our standard reels, size and quantity standards is the best way to economically order. With that being said, please know, we can make just about any size or footage that you would like. Price-wise based on the manufacturing measurements of both make-ready and run, less is more and more is better.
We really don’t have set minimum order quantities. Machine make ready versus run length will be a big factor in the pricing. For example, it takes just as much time to set up the extruding line for 100 feet of pipe as it does for 96,000 feet of pipe.
Let’s now move on to available colors. The most common color that we make is orange which is for telecommunications purposes. Black is the second most used. We can make the pipe in any color in the rainbow. We can also add stripes of any color to the pipe. Orange and black are our base colors and priced the same. Other color prices vary due to colorant costs. Different colors should not be a deterrent we can make any and all colors.
What methods do we use for delivery? The truckload is a flatbed trailer that measures either 48 feet or 53 feet in length. It has to be a minimum of 102 inches across. For orders of 1 or 2 reels we use, less than truckload (LTL) On orders between LTL’s and truckloads we occasionally use a “hotshot.” This is a truck drawn trailer that can handle up to 6 standard reels.
One thing that needs to be determined early on in the process, is to make sure that the final destination has the proper equipment to unload the trucks. Discuss this with us as we can provide options for delivery if needed.
