What Happens with Unused HDPE Pipe and Reels After Your Project?

We know that when you’re estimating a job, it’s always better to have a little too much material than not enough. But once the trench is filled and the cables are pulled, you might find yourself looking at leftover pipe or a stack of empty 96″ wooden reels.

So, what should you do with them? To help our customers manage their job site cleanup efficiently, we’ve put together this guide outlining our official return policies and the best ways to handle your leftover HDPE materials.

Getting rid of giant wooden reels doesn’t have to be a headache. Creek Plastics offers a streamlined reel return program to help clear out your yard.

• We handle the logistics: We can schedule a carrier to pick up your intact, empty, or partial reels. All we require is that you have personnel and machinery on-site to load the used reels onto the truck.
• Truckload Quantities: To make freight economical, we ask for full truckload quantities, requiring a minimum of 12 of our standard 96” reels.
• Maximizing Space: Ideally, 14 to 16 reels can fit perfectly on a full flatbed trailer when the flanges are properly staggered during loading.
• Preparation: Please ensure each shipment is prepared with a standard commercially acceptable bill of lading.

Customers often ask if unused pipe can be returned and re-melted directly into our primary manufacturing lines. To guarantee the structural integrity of our conduit, Creek Plastics does not re-introduce jobsite-returned pipe into our extrusion process.

Our HDPE conduit meets rigorous industry standards, including ASTM, UL, and NEMA specifications. To guarantee this level of quality, we strictly control our manufacturing inputs to produce only the highest quality product. Once pipe leaves our facility, we cannot verify its environmental exposure, handling, or potential chemical contamination. Accepting returned pipe back into our virgin manufacturing line would compromise the quality of future products.

However, to help contractors clear their yards without dumping material into landfills, Creek Plastics provides acceptable disposal management for eligible scrap and unused HDPE materials.

If returning the pipe to Creek Plastics isn’t an option, what are your choices? Here is a breakdown of what you can (and shouldn’t) do with leftover HDPE pipe:

• Save It for Future Jobs: HDPE doesn’t degrade in storage. Save partial coils or sticks for short service drops, road crossings, or repair sleeves on your next project.
• Repurpose for Jobsite Protection: Slit short pieces of pipe to protect exposed hoses and temporary lines from heavy machinery, or cut them into sleeves for fence posts and bollards.
• Donate to Trade Programs: Vocational schools and electrical apprenticeship centers welcome pipe donations to train students on conduit pulling and pipe fusion.
• Landfill Disposal (Scraps Only): For tiny off-cuts that can’t be reused, cut them down into short lengths so they pack efficiently into your commercial dumpster.
• Never Burn HDPE: Burning plastic pipe is dangerous, illegal in most areas, and produces hazardous toxic fumes and melting fire risks.
• Trash Cans: Small off-cuts (under 2–3 feet) can be thrown into standard jobsite or household trash bins as general waste, provided the lid closes.
• Recycling Cans: Do not place pipe in residential curbside recycling bins. Municipal programs accept #2 HDPE bottles and jugs, not heavy utility pipe.
• Bulk Pickup Fees: Oversized pipe or coils set on the curb will be skipped by standard trucks. Disposing of larger quantities typically requires scheduling a bulk waste pickup or dumpster through your local hauler, which usually involves added fees.

During line startups, shutdowns, and product size transitions, we naturally generate brief sections of off-spec pipe alongside resin floor sweepings. Creek Plastics does not re-use pipe, scrap, or floorsweep in our production due to quality control and disposes of scrap through acceptable means.
